TANZANIA

Tanzania is without any doubt one of the most exciting countries in the world and offers some of the most romantic and tropical sets in Africa - Pemba and Zanzibar. Zanzibar Stone Town was once home to Sultans and explorers and is the land of exotic spices, turquoise crystal waters and white soft sandy beaches. It lies on the east coast of Africa and is bordered to the north by Kenya and Uganda. To the west is Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi and Zambia, and to the south are Malawi and Mozambique.

The country is divided into several clearly defined regions with differing geographical features: the coastal plains, the Maasai steppe and miombo woodlands and high plateau in the Southern area. Savannah and bush cover half of the country. Volcanic highlands can be seen in the north east and south west. Tanzania shares the waters of the Great African Lakes Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyasa with its neighbours.

Tanzania is a friendly country, which once consisted of Tanganyika (the mainland) and the Zanzibar Isles (Pemba & Mafia). Since 1964 the two now make an harmonious unity. The country is rich in culture; a blend of African, Arabian, Indian and European influences.

At least a quarter of its total area has been allocated to wildlife national parks and protected areas. Africa's biggest game reserve, the Serengeti and the volcanic crater at Ngorongoro offer the ultimate safari experience.

The Kilimanjaro rises from the plains to a height of 5895 mt above sea level and is the highest free standing mountain in the world and Africa?s highest peak.

The climate is mainly divided between the "long rains" from April to May and the "short rains" during November and December into January. Enjoy the great variety Tanzania has to offer: sunbathing in tropical islands, climbing the Kili, watching the annual migration of plains game.

The term 'Big Five' refers to five of Africa's greatest wild animals: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Althought many travellers regard a visit to Kenya as incomplete without having spotted, and perhaps photographed, the Big Five, it's better to keep in mind that the whole wildlife is roaming free and there is no guarantee to see them all.

Mount Meru, at 4,568 mt above sl - is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and offers one of the most challenging climbs.
